On the 25th of June 2025, Mr. Alpha Amadu Jalloh, acclaimed author and recipient of the 2025 Africa Renaissance Leadership Award, officially presented his groundbreaking book Monopoly of Happiness: Unveiling Sierra Leone’s Social Imbalance to Mr. Martin Fritz, Commissioner for UNESCO Austria, at the UNESCO Office in Vienna.
This historic moment marks the first time a book authored by an African has been formally included in the library of UNESCO Austria. The inclusion of Monopoly of Happiness into their collection is seen not only as a literary milestone but also a powerful statement on cultural diplomacy, equity in global discourse and Africa’s intellectual contributions to the world stage.
During the presentation, Mr. Martin Fritz warmly welcomed Mr. Jalloh and commended the depth, vision and cultural relevance embedded in the book. He expressed appreciation for the opportunity to enrich UNESCO Austria’s understanding of Sierra Leone and the African continent at large. In his remarks, Mr. Fritz stated:
> “This is more than just a book donation. It is a valuable addition that allows us to better understand the complexities, aspirations and perspectives of African societies. Mr. Jalloh’s work offers insight into political, social and cultural dynamics that are often underrepresented. We consider this book a bridge to deeper cultural connections and mutual respect.”
Mr. Jalloh, in his response, emphasized that the book is a call for rethinking global partnerships with Africa. He stated:
> “I am honoured that Monopoly of Happiness has found a place here at UNESCO Austria. This is not just my story or Sierra Leone’s. It is Africa’s voice seeking equity, dignity and space to initiate ideas and shape global narratives. For too long, partnerships with Africa have often been one-sided, with the continent positioned as a recipient rather than an equal. I hope this book becomes part of the dialogue that changes that.”
Mr. Jalloh further stressed the importance of cultural understanding and inclusiveness and thanked Mr. Fritz and the entire UNESCO Austria team for their openness and hospitality. He dedicated the gesture to all Africans striving to tell their own stories and shape their own futures, especially the youth.
The event ended with a symbolic handover of the book, photographs and a commitment by both parties to explore future collaborations that promote African literature, cultural engagement and knowledge exchange.
