Air India CEO has confirmed that 241 out of the 242 passengers and crew members on board the Air India plane which crashed on Thursday, June 12, 2025, died.
Some 232 passengers and 10 crew members were said to be on board the plane when it crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport in western India. The plane was bound for London.
The crash occurred in Meghaninagar area near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport around 2 pm local time, according to multiple local media reports which shared several photos of the crash scene.
Local media reports cited Air India as saying the crashed plane from Ahmedabad to Gatwick had 169 Indians, 53 British nationals and one Canadian national on-board.

Indian police, according to local media reports, have revealed that 204 bodies have been recovered. But it remains unknown how many of those victims were on the plane, or were on the ground when the plane crashed.
Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national who was on the plane when it crashed in a residential area, is reported to have survived. He told journalists that “Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly.”

Reports say the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft (AI171) crashed into an accommodation used by doctors.
Investigation
The US and UK said they are sending teams of investigators to India to investigate the cause of the crash.
The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced it will be leading a team of American investigators who are heading to India to assist local authorities’ probe into the crash of the Boeing passenger plane. NTSB made the announcement in a post on X.

Compensations
Meanwhile, Tata Group, the owner of Air India and one of India’s largest conglomerates, has announced that it will provide ₹1 crore ($116,868) to the families of each person who has lost their life in the Ahmedabad plane crash.

The Group made the announcement in a post on X.
According to the Group, “We will also cover the medical expenses of those injured and ensure that they receive all necessary care and support.”
It said: “Additionally we will provide support in the building up of the B J Medical’s hostel.”
Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, had earlier asked India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah, and Civil Aviation Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu to go to Ahmedabad and ensure all possible assistance to those affected in the crash, according to reports.
The Aviation Minister expressed deep sorry over the plane crash, saying he was “shocked and devastated” by the tragedy.
“My thoughts and prayers are with all those on board and their families,” says the Aviation Minister.
Some background
Air India was bought by Indian multinational conglomerate Tata Group in 2022, and was widely regarded as a historic homecoming.
Originally founded by J.R.D. Tata in 1932 before being nationalized in 1953, the deal marked the return of Air India to its original owners after nearly 70 years of government control.
