Ghana’s main opposition party, the New Patriotic Party’s Members of Parliament (MPs) have criticized President John Dramani Mahama’s nominations of seven justices of the Appeal Court to the Supreme Court of Ghana. According to the lawmakers, the President is using the new appointments to the Supreme Court for his third-term bid.

The Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, speaking on behalf of his New Patriotic Party, described the nominations of the seven judges to the Supreme Court as a veiled attempt by President Mahama to implement a third-term agenda.

Speaking at a press conference organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Thursday, May 1, Mr Afenyo-Markin cautioned the move poses a serious threat to the balance of power and the independence of the judiciary.

He said: “This is not a routine judicial appointment. What we are witnessing is a strategic and deliberate effort to pack the Supreme Court with loyalists.”

According to him, “The nomination of seven Appeals Court judges immediately after suspending the Chief Justice reveals a deeper, more dangerous political ambition—a third-term agenda in disguise, accusing President Mahama of undermining democratic governance and constitutional principles.
