Morocco has assured Ghana that its citizens and all Africans living in Morocco are safe, contrary to circulating videos on social media claiming a massacre of 700 Africans.
According to Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in a post on Facebook, he has held fruitful discussions with the Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, Imane Ouaadil.
He said Ambassador Imane Ouaadil has provided assurance of the safety of Ghanaians and all Africans in Morocco.
He revealed that: “I have held fruitful and assuring discussions with the Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Imane Ouaadil. She has assured that Ghanaians and all Africans living in Morocco are safe, contrary to the widely circulated videos on social media falsely claiming that some 700 Africans are being massacred.”
Mr. Ablakwa clarified that the footage circulating on social media is from an old border incident on June 24, 2022, which resulted in the loss of 23 lives. The incident was investigated by Moroccan and Spanish authorities, and no Ghanaian casualties were recorded.
The assurance comes as Morocco has decided to double scholarships for Ghanaian students from 90 to 180 starting this year. Additionally, Morocco and Ghana have agreed to initiate a visa waiver agreement for all categories of travelers from both countries, which will be presented to their parliaments for ratification shortly. The two countries have also pledged to deepen collaboration in agribusiness, tourism, and security.
