Nigerian Box Office Soars with Record-Breaking 60% Growth in 2024

The Nigerian film industry has achieved a historic milestone, with the box office recording an extraordinary 60 per cent increase in revenue in 2024. According to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), ticket sales across cinemas nationwide surged to an impressive N11.5 billion, compared to N7.2 billion in 2023.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, CEAN National Chairman, Mr. Ope Ajayi, attributed this remarkable growth to the resilience, creativity, and determination of industry stakeholders.

“In 2024, cinemas welcomed over 2.66 million moviegoers, up from 2.54 million in 2023, marking the first significant increase in admissions since 2020. This underscores a major recovery in the cinema subsector,” Ajayi said.

The year also witnessed a stellar performance from Nollywood, with top films like Everybody Loves Jennifer leading the pack with N1.124 billion in ticket sales. Other hits include Queen Lateefah (N365.5 million), Ajosepo (N257.3 million), Ajakaju (N252.8 million), and Alakada Bad & Boujee (N229.1 million). Ajayi noted that Everybody Loves Jennifer and Alakada Bad & Boujee are still screening in cinemas.

Hollywood also made a strong showing, with blockbusters like Deadpool & Wolverine, Bad Boys 4, Gladiator II, Moana 2, and Venom 3 dominating Nigerian cinemas.

Despite economic challenges, the Nigerian film industry’s 2024 performance showcases its resilience and growing global appeal, setting the stage for even greater achievements in the coming years.
