Ghana’s young population is a significant force, making up about 38% of the population, according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census. The Ghana Youth Manifesto, launched on December 23, 2023, represents the aspirations and concerns of young people, outlining a roadmap for a more equitable and inclusive nation.
The Manifesto’s timing is crucial, given the economic shocks and political violence affecting the West African Sub-Region. As Ghana prepares for elections on December 7, 2024, public awareness of the manifesto and uniting youth voices on policy recommendations are vital.
However, challenges persist. About 1.9 million youth aged 15-35 are not in education, employment, or training, and 1.1 million small and light weapons are circulating illegally in the country. This combination is a recipe for disaster, especially in an election year.
To address these concerns, the Love Aid Foundation proposed a public education campaign on the Youth Manifesto and the harmful effects of electoral violence. The campaign focused on hotspots in the Volta Region, engaging about 2,000 citizens, 70% of whom are under 35.
The Ghana Youth Manifesto is a critical document that outlines the aspirations and concerns of young people in Ghana. It’s essential to prioritize their needs, especially in areas like education, employment, and economic empowerment. By doing so, Ghana can harness the potential of its young population and create a brighter future for all.
Princess Lovia Tetteh- the executive director of Love Aid Foundation, said this at a stakeholder engagement held on October 28, 2024.
The engagement sought to inform and seek the support of the stakeholders throughout the various community engagements. The program which included presentations on the Youth Manifesto as well as the roles of women and young people in promoting peace saw in attendance various Regional and Municipal directors from the National Youth Authority (NYA), National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Department of Gender and the Ghana Prisons Service. The program was graced by Mr. Augustus K Awity- the Regional Coordinating Director of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council.
The Ghana Youth Manifesto Activism and Peaceful Elections Campaign in the Volta Region is spearheaded by Love Aid Foundation in partnership with Youth Alliance for Sustainability, Youth for Christ, McGharbins Network and National Youth Authority with support from FOSDA.
