Former President John Mahama has emerged the winner of Ghana’s 2024 Presidential election. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who contested the election on the ticket of the ruling New Patriotic Party, graciously conceded defeat and congratulated Mahama on his win.
In a press conference held at his residence, Bawumia revealed that he had called Mahama to offer his congratulations. He also disclosed that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) had won the Parliamentary election.
Bawumia’s concession came before the official results were announced, in an effort to ease tension and promote peace. Unfortunately, there have been reports of election-related violence in some parts of the country, resulting in the loss of at least two lives.
In his concession speech, Bawumia reiterated his commitment to peace and stability, saying, “I said during the signing of the peace pact that I was sure of two things: Ghana will win, and peace will reign… The people of Ghana have spoken. The people have voted for change at this time, and we respect that decision with all humility.”
Mahama’s victory marks a significant shift in Ghana’s political landscape, and his supporters are celebrating across the country.
In 2016, Mr. Mahama lost his second term bid to outgoing President, Nana Akufo-Addo. And he now has the opportunity to serve just one more term, beginning January 7, 2025.
