Former President John Mahama says konkonsa (gossip) by President Nana Akufo-Addo, has severed diplomatic relationship between Ghana and its neighbor, Burkina Faso.

Mr. Mahama, who is the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) condemned Mr. Akufo-Addo for what he considers to be his poor handling of Ghana-Burkina Faso relationship.

Speaking during a press engagement dubbed “Mahama Conversations” in Bolgatanga after his four-day campaign tour of the Upper Region, Mr. Mahama observed the need for close cooperation with neighboring countries to curtail any external threats to Ghana.

According to him, “We know what is happening in Burkina Faso.  Indeed we should be working closer with our comrades in Burkina Faso. Unfortunately, this government has created tension between us and Burkina Faso because our president has opened his mouth wide. You saw the video. He went and was doing konkonsa about your neighbours.

“We all are here. We are suffering. America called you small and you’re so excited and you’re doing konkonsa about your neighbour and so it has created some kind of diplomatic tension and after he said it he went there to apologize but still it’s not the best”.

Mr. Mahama encouraged the next government to prioritize mending ties with Burkina Faso, highlighting Ghana’s role as host of the Accra Initiative, a regional anti-terrorism strategy.
Mr. Mahama also stressed the need for collaboration to address the growing insecurity in Burkina Faso, warning that the spread of terrorism could have devastating consequences for Ghana if left unchecked.

“So when the government changes we have to go and talk to our neighbours because we must work together. Indeed the whole anti-terrorism strategy of this sub-region was done in Accra. It was called Accra and so we’re the host of that initiative.

“In the meantime, we must also strengthen our surveillance and security so that in case it comes into our borders we are able to deal with it. And that is why we must solve the Bawku crisis as quickly as possible”, the NDC flag bearer added.
