With less than 24 hours to Ghana’s general elections, former President John Dramani Mahama has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of attempting to assist the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in rigging the polls.
In a strongly worded post on social media, Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), stated that despite reports of exposed validating stamps, the EC has refused to act decisively to prevent potential electoral fraud.
“Since Thursday night, the National Democratic Congress has reported several cases of exposed Validating Stamps to the Commission, yet they have refused to issue a clear and unambiguous directive to stop their staff from disclosing the identities and details of the validating stamps ahead of tomorrow’s general elections,” he wrote.
He alleged that exposing the serial numbers of validating stamps creates an opportunity for fake ballot papers to be authenticated, thereby facilitating ballot stuffing. Mahama further cited an internal memo of the EC dated October 10, 2024, as evidence of a calculated plot to enable such activities.
“I call on the National Peace Council, Religious and Traditional Leaders, Civil Society, the International Community, and the Election Observer Missions to call the Electoral Commission to order,” he appealed.
Meanwhile, Ghanaians are set to vote tomorrow, December 7, 2024, to elect a president who will lead the country for the next four years, along with Members of Parliament for the 275 constituencies.
In the lead-up to the elections, special voting exercises were conducted last Monday and Thursday, December 5, to allow security personnel, media practitioners, and election officials to cast their ballots. The process was generally smooth, although reports of missing names and delays in some areas raised concerns.
