In a significant development, President John Mahama has nominated Dr. Johnson Asiama as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana, subject to approval from the Council of State. Dr. Asiama, who previously served as the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2016 to 2017, will replace the outgoing Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, who is set to retire on March 28, 2025.
With a PhD in Economics from the University of Southampton, UK, Dr. Asiama brings a wealth of experience in monetary policy formulation, financial stability regulation, and economic research. His extensive background in banking, spanning over 23 years at the Bank of Ghana, makes him an ideal candidate for the position.
As the new Governor, Dr. Asiama will face significant challenges, including addressing concerns over inflation, currency depreciation, and economic recovery. His leadership will be crucial in restoring confidence in the financial sector and steering monetary policies in alignment with the Mahama administration’s broader economic agenda.
Dr. Asiama’s nomination has been seen as a return to the central bank, where he previously worked before his exit in 2017. His experience and expertise will be invaluable in navigating the complex economic landscape and ensuring the stability of Ghana’s financial system.
