Atletico Madrid pulled off a stunning comeback to beat Barcelona 2-1 in La Liga on Saturday night, December 21.
The winning goal was scored by Alexander Sorloth in the 96th minute, completing a dramatic turnaround for Atletico Madrid. The victory marks the first time in 17 years that Atletico Madrid won away from home at Barcelona. The last time Atletico Madrid won against Barcelona away from home was in 2006 when Fernando Torres scored the winning goal.
The Saturday’s match was played at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, and Atletico Madrid’s victory marks a significant upset in the league.
Atletico Madrid following the victory, moved to the top of the table with 41 points and they will go into the New Year as League leaders. Barcelona remain in second place with 38 points on La Liga table but could see themselves dropped to third place later today if Real Madrid are able to beat Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabeau to move to second place with 40 points and a game in hand.
