Ghana’s Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights has called on the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Attorney-General to expedite investigations and prosecutorial processes into allegations of sexual abuse involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
In a statement issued on October 21, 2026, the Committee said it was gravely concerned about the allegations and reports that 19 girls had come forward in connection with the matter.
It acknowledged developments in the police investigation, including the reported arrest of the headmaster and the submission of a case docket to the Attorney-General, and urged authorities to act promptly where the evidence supports prosecution, while respecting due process.
The Committee also called on the Ministries of Education and Gender, Children and Social Protection to provide affected students with psychological counselling, psychosocial support and protection against intimidation, stigma and retaliation.
It stressed that the students’ privacy, dignity and educational welfare must remain paramount throughout the investigation.
Additionally, the Committee urged the Education Ministry and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to strengthen confidential reporting mechanisms in schools and ensure that complaints of sexual abuse are promptly referred to the appropriate authorities.
It further called for an impartial investigation into any officials who may have received earlier complaints but failed to act, insisting that any established dereliction of duty must attract appropriate accountability measures.
The statement was signed by Kumawu MP and Committee Chairman, Ernest Yaw Anim, who reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to monitoring the case and advocating safeguards to prevent similar incidents.
