Nigerian Man Who Lost Wife and 6 Children in Attack Remarries in Kano Mass Wedding

A Nigerian man, Haruna Bashir, who tragically lost his wife and six children in a brutal attack earlier this year, has remarried as part of a mass wedding ceremony organised by the Kano State Government.

Bashir was among 1,500 couples who tied the knot on Friday and Saturday during the event sponsored by Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The marriage marks a significant step in Bashir’s efforts to rebuild his life following the devastating loss of his immediate family six months ago.

According to Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, which coordinated the mass wedding, Bashir had largely withdrawn from social interactions after the tragedy.

“Since the tragic incident, he hardly interacted with people. Today, he is gradually returning to normal life,” Daurawa said.

The attack occurred in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters on January 17, 2025, when assailants reportedly broke into Bashir’s home and attacked his family with dangerous weapons.

Those killed were his wife, Fatima Abubakar, 35, and their six children: Maimuna, 17; Aisha, 16; Bashir, 13; Abubakar, 10; Faruk, 7; and Abdulsalam, who was just over one year old.

Following investigations, the Kano State Police Command arrested three principal suspects, including a family member, in connection with the killings.

Bashir’s remarriage is being viewed by many as a hopeful new chapter after one of the most heartbreaking family tragedies recorded in the state this year.
