President Duma Gideon Boko has hailed the recovery of a massive 1,300-carat diamond by Lucara Botswana, describing the discovery as further proof of Botswana’s standing as a leading producer of some of the world’s most exceptional diamonds.
The president disclosed that he was presented with the gemstone by Lucara Botswana, noting that it ranks among the largest diamonds ever recovered by the company and is one of the biggest ever discovered globally.
“We were presented with an extraordinary 1,300-carat diamond by Lucara Botswana, one of the largest diamonds ever recovered by the company and the sixth-largest diamond ever discovered in the world,” Boko said.
He added that the discovery reinforces Botswana’s reputation in the global diamond industry.
“This remarkable find is another testament to Botswana’s position as the global home of the world’s most exceptional diamonds,” he stated.
While acknowledging the continued importance of the diamond sector, Boko stressed that the country remains committed to broadening its economic base and maximizing the benefits derived from its natural resources.
“As we continue to diversify our economy, diamonds remain a strategic national asset. Our focus is not only on extracting mineral wealth but on creating greater value through beneficiation, innovation, investment, and sustainable partnerships that translate our natural resources into lasting national prosperity,” he said.
The president also reiterated Botswana’s support for the natural diamond industry, emphasizing the uniqueness and authenticity of naturally formed gemstones.
“Botswana continues to champion the enduring value and authenticity of natural diamonds, because some treasures are shaped by nature, not manufactured in a laboratory,” Boko said.
The discovery adds to Botswana’s long-standing prominence in the global diamond market and highlights the continued significance of the mining sector to the country’s economy.
