Ghanaians are holding significantly more funds in their mobile money wallets than at any point in the country’s history, with wallet balances climbing to a record GH¢40 billion in June 2026. The latest figures highlight the continued expansion of Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem and the growing dependence on mobile money for everyday financial activities.

According to the latest payment systems statistics published by the Bank of Ghana, mobile money float balances increased from GH¢28.9 billion in June 2025 to GH¢40 billion in June 2026, representing a year-on-year growth of more than 38%.

The increase indicates that mobile money wallets are no longer used solely for sending and receiving payments. They are increasingly becoming a preferred place for households, small businesses and informal enterprises to keep funds for daily use.

The development also reflects rising public confidence in digital financial services as cashless payments continue to become more common across the country.

With more people opting to leave money in their wallets instead of withdrawing cash immediately, mobile money is playing a greater role in supporting routine purchases, business transactions and emergency spending.

Growth was also evident across the wider mobile money sector.

The number of registered mobile money accounts rose from 76.4 million in June 2025 to 84.6 million in June 2026. Meanwhile, active accounts reached 26.4 million, pointing to a continued increase in the number of users who regularly rely on digital financial services.

Transaction volumes remained strong, further demonstrating the importance of mobile money to Ghana’s retail economy.

In June 2026 alone, mobile money platforms handled 954 million transactions valued at GH¢492.9 billion. The figures underscore the growing use of mobile wallets for merchant payments, salary payments, bill settlements, remittances and person-to-person transfers.

The industry’s agent network also expanded, further strengthening financial access nationwide. Registered mobile money agents surpassed one million for the first time, reaching 1.016 million, while active agents increased to 546,000.

The growing agent network is expected to improve financial inclusion by extending access to digital financial services in both major cities and underserved rural communities.

Cross-platform interoperability also recorded continued growth during the period.

Users completed 33 million transactions across different mobile money networks, with a total value of GH¢6.2 billion during the month.

The increase reflects the ease with which customers can transfer funds between different mobile money providers, enhancing the efficiency of Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem.

The latest Bank of Ghana data further cements mobile money’s role as one of the country’s most important financial infrastructure developments.

In addition to enabling payments, mobile money has increasingly become a key platform for savings, business transactions and financial inclusion.

With wallet balances, transaction values and active users all continuing to grow, the sector is expected to assume an even larger role in driving economic activity, broadening access to formal financial services and supporting Ghana’s shift toward a more digitally driven economy.
