Parliament on Thursday officially swore in Isata Felicia Wleh-Philips as the new Member of Parliament for Kono District, following the death of the late Lucinda Finda Kellie.
The swearing-in ceremony, held in the Chamber of Parliament, was conducted in accordance with the Public Elections Act, 2022, after the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) formally notified Parliament of Hon. Wleh-Philips’ election to fill the vacant parliamentary seat.
The oath of office was administered by the Clerk of Parliament on the directive of the Speaker of Parliament, Segepoh Solomon Thomas, pursuant to Section 83 of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, 1991, read together with Standing Order 1A as contained in the Third Schedule of the Constitution.
Declaring Wleh-Philips duly elected, Speaker Thomas officially welcomed her to the Sixth Parliament of the Second Republic of Sierra Leone 0and reminded her of the enormous responsibility entrusted to her by the people of Kono District.
He urged the newly sworn-in legislator to acquaint herself with the Standing Orders of Parliament and the Constitution, describing them as indispensable tools for effective participation in parliamentary debates, lawmaking and oversight.
“The work of Parliament is demanding, but it is also an honour to serve the people,” Speaker Thomas said. “You are coming in to continue the work started by your predecessor. Serve with integrity, listen to your constituents and bring their concerns to this House.”
The Speaker also stressed the importance of punctuality and dedication to parliamentary business, reminding the new Member of Parliament that sittings commence promptly at 10:00 a.m.
“I encourage you to be punctual, diligent and committed to the work of the House,” he admonished.
Speaker Thomas further assigned Wleh-Philips the parliamentary seat previously occupied by the late Lucinda Finda Kellie and congratulated her on her election.
Hon. Wleh-Philips assumes office with immediate effect and will serve the remainder of the current parliamentary term as the representative of Kono District.
Members of Parliament from both the ruling and opposition benches warmly welcomed the new legislator and expressed confidence that she would make meaningful contributions to parliamentary deliberations and national development while effectively representing the interests of her constituents.
The swearing-in marks the formal completion of the process to fill the vacancy created by the passing of Lucinda Finda Kellie, ensuring that the people of Kono District continue to have representation in Parliament.
