A Ghanaian social media influencer, Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has been extradited to the United States for alleged $8 million romance fraud targeting elderly Americans.

He is expected to face trial in the US. Abu Trica has denied all the charges leveled against him.

According to US and Ghanaian prosecutors, he used AI tools to create fake online identities, targeting primarily elderly victims through social media and dating sites.

Prosecutors say he used the fake identities to earn the trust of his victims and subsequently extorted money from them.

He was flown to America on Thursday, July 9, 2026. He faces up to 20 years in prison if found guilty of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.

His lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, told the media that he had gone to court to stop the extradition, only to learn that Abu Trica had been extradited on board a Delta Airlines flight.

The lawyer accused the Ghanaian government of sidestepping “judicial oversight” by allegedly not waiting for the court’s verdict, saying the government’s decision to extradite Abu Trica “raises profound constitutional questions.”
