Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo Kills 65, Africa CDC Reports 246 Suspected Cases in Ituri Province

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has announced that at least 65 persons have died from a new outbreak of ebola in DR Congo.

According to Africa CDC, some 246 suspected cases of ebola in Ituri province of DR Congo.

In a statement on Friday, Africa CDC says preliminary laboratory results from the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB) detected the Ebola virus in 13 out of 20 samples tested.

It stated that the results suggest a non-Zaire ebola virus strain, adding that sequencing is ongoing to further characterise the virus.

According to the statement, “The results are expected within the next 24 hours with support from Africa CDC.”

It noted that the suspected cases and deaths were reported mainly in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, while four deaths were recorded among laboratory-confirmed cases.

It says suspected cases have also been reported in Bunia and pending confirmation.
