President William Ruto has praised Kenya’s long-standing collaboration with the United Nations, highlighting its transformative impact on education and healthcare while positioning Nairobi as a leading global hub for UN operations.
In a statement following a meeting with Catherine Russell, the head of UNICEF, President Ruto underscored the significance of the six-decade partnership.
“We value the strong partnership we have built with the United Nations in the past 60 years, a relationship that has now elevated Nairobi into a premier global UN hub alongside New York, Geneva, and Vienna,” Ruto said.
The President noted that UN agencies, particularly UNICEF, have played a crucial role in shaping Kenya’s policy direction, especially in education reforms and maternal health.
“Through this partnership, agencies such as UNICEF have played a central role in shaping our education reforms, supporting the transition to the Competency-Based Education and Training system, while strengthening our efforts to reduce maternal mortality and improve learning outcomes,” he added.
Ruto revealed that his discussions with Russell at State House in Nairobi focused on deepening collaboration to deliver tangible benefits for Kenyans.
“Met UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russel, State House, Nairobi. We agreed to continue working towards a healthier, better-educated nation, driven by collaboration that delivers real results for the people of Kenya,” he said.
Kenya hosts one of the UN’s largest global presences, with Nairobi serving as a key headquarters for multiple agencies, reinforcing the country’s strategic role in international development efforts across Africa.
