The Anambra State Police Command has arrested 29-year-old Edeh Osinachi for allegedly inflicting severe physical injuries on her 17-year-old house help in Awka. The arrest followed a report initiated by school authorities and the state Ministry of Education.
Discovery and Preliminary Investigation
The abuse came to light on Tuesday, February 3, 2025, when officials at the victim’s school noticed severe injuries on her body during a teaching session. Upon questioning the student, she revealed that the wounds were inflicted by her guardian as a form of punishment.
According to the victim, the incident was sparked after she used Mrs. Osinachi’s mobile phone to make calls without obtaining prior permission.
The Alleged Assault
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the suspect, angered by the girl’s actions, used a hot pressing iron to burn the teenager. In a statement released on Wednesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the suspect had confessed to the act during interrogation.
“The suspect allegedly abused and inflicted serious injuries on a 17-year-old girl said to be her house help in Awka,” Ikenga stated. “During interrogation by the police, the suspect reportedly confessed to the act.”
Police Commitment and Advice to Parents
SP Ikenga commended the school authorities for their vigilance, noting that their intervention was crucial in rescuing the victim. He assured the public that the command remains committed to the safety of students and that a thorough investigation is underway to ensure justice is served.
The statement concluded with a stern warning to parents regarding the welfare of their children: “The command also urges parents to give birth to the number of children they can train, to avoid leaving them vulnerable to abuse while in the care of others.”
