At least three illegal gold miners, known locally in Ghana as galamseyers, have died at Heath Goldfields Ltd’s mine at Prestea in the Western Region of Ghana, the company has confirmed.
The deceased were accordingly trapped in an inactive underground section of Heath Goldfields Ltd mine. They reportedly used an unauthorized route to access the restricted areas of the mine.
There were reports in the Bogoso-Prestea area indicating that about 11 galamseyers may have been trapped after parts of an abandoned mine caved in over the weekend.
In a statement released on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Heath Goldfields Ltd extended condolences to the bereaved families and the Prestea community.
The company said in the statement that “Every loss of life, regardless of circumstance, is painful, and we must stand with the affected families in grief and sympathy.”
According to Heath Goldfields, it was fully cooperating with the Ghana Police Service, the Minerals Commission, and the National Disaster Management Organisation.
