President Donald Trump has drastically cut refugees admissions to the United States, giving priority to white South Africans.

His administration announced in a notice published on Thursday, October 30, 2025, that it will limit the number of refugees admitted to the US to 7,500 over the next year.

The new cap marks a drastic cut from the previous limit of 125,000 set by ex-President Joe Biden.

The administration provided no reason for the cut. According to the notice, the cut was “justified by humanitarian concerns or is otherwise in the national interest.”

Furthermore, the notice posted to the website of the Federal Register says the 7,500 admissions would “primarily” be allocated to Afrikaner South Africans and “other victims illegal or unjust discrimination in their respective homelands.”

It would be recalled that that in January this year, President Trump signed an executive order suspending the US Refugee Admissions Programme, saying at the time that the move would allow US authorities to prioritize national security and public safety.

In 2020, Trump’s first administration set what was then the initial lowest refugee admissions cap, limiting admissions to 15,000 spots for the year 2021.
