At least 11 children and four adults have died in a tragic boat accident on Ghana’s Volta Lake.

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) confirmed the deaths in the accident which occurred near Kete Krachi on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

The deceased children were between the ages of two and 14 (five boys and six girls).

The adults included three women and one man aged between 18 and 64.

Four other adults who were also on board the boat survived.

The bodies of 12 of the deceased was deposited at the Kete Krachi and Worawora Government Hospital mortuaries. The remaining three children have since been buried.

Preliminary reports, says the GMA, have revealed that the boat was largely overloaded beyond its safe operational capacity.

The accident occurred around 1:30 pm when the boat carrying passengers – reportedly returning from a funeral at Okuma to Bovime both in the Krachi West District of the Oti Region – capsized.

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, October 12, 2025, the Ghana Maritime Authority stated that it deemed the accident as a “critical and unacceptable breach of safety standards and is committed to full transparency and decisive corrective action.”

According to the GMA, an investigative team has been deployed, comprising maritime safety inspectors and personnel from the Navy Task Force in Dambai to the scene.

The team’s mandate, it says, is to establish the precise cause of the accident, identify any violations of safety regulations, and ensure that all responsible parties are held fully accountable under the law.
