Nigeria’s Inflation Falls To 20.12% In August

Nigeria recorded a 20.12 percent drop in inflation for the month of August 2025.

The 20.12 percent is relative to the 20.88 percent recorded in July this year, according to Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

NBS shared the latest inflation data with journalists on Monday, September 15, 2025.

According to the Bureau, headline inflation for August recorded a decrease of 1.76 percent compared to the July 2025 headline inflation rate.

The NBS said on a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate was 12.03 percent recorded in August 2024.

It says the headline rate of inflation on a year-on-year basis fell in August 2025 as compared to the same month in 2024, but with a different base year, November 2009 = 100.

NBS further reported that on a month-on-month basis, the rate of inflation in August of this year was 0.74 percent, which was 1.25 percent, lower than 1.99 percent recorded in July 2025, meaning the rate of increase in the average price level in August was lower than the rate of increase in the average price level in July 2025.

According to NBS, food inflation in August 2025 was in 21.87 percent on a year-on-year basis, representing 15.65 percentage points lower when compared to the 37.52 percent recorded in August 2024.

NBS says the sharp fall in the yearly food inflation rate was technically as a result of the change in the base year.
