Big Win Over Ethiopia Keeps Sierra Leone World Cup Dream Alive

Sierra Leone’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup are still alive—just. After a frustrating 1–1 draw against Guinea-Bissau, the Leone Stars bounced back with a crucial 2–0 win over Ethiopia in Monrovia, keeping their qualification chances alive heading into the final two matches.

With only the group winners qualifying directly, and just four spots available for the best second-placed teams, Sierra Leone must win both remaining matches and improve their goal difference to stay in the race. Gabon currently leads the second-place rankings, meaning every goal and point now matters more than ever.

The first goal came in the 38th minute. Momoh Kamara scored after a great pass, giving Sierra Leone the lead. The second goal was special—Alhassan Koroma ran nearly the whole field and scored in the last minute of the game, sealing the win in style.

This result lifts Sierra Leone to third place with 12 points, just three behind Burkina Faso, who they host next in what is being called a “must-win” match. Victory there could push Sierra Leone into second place and boost their goal difference—a key factor in the playoff race.

After Burkina Faso, Sierra Leone will face Djibouti, a team they must beat convincingly to stay competitive in the second-place rankings.

Coach Mohamed Kallon said the team is focused and ready. With strong defense, renewed energy, and smart attacking play, the Leone Stars are still fighting—and the dream is still alive.
