Ghana: Wontumi TV Tells Mahama Sorry Over “Inappropriate” Helicopter Crash Accusation

A local television station in Ghana, Wontumi TV, has said sorry to Ghanaian President, John Dramani Mahama, and his ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) over what it described as “inappropriate” comments one of its presenters made which sought to suggest that Mr. Mahama had a ‘hand’ in the recent helicopter crash which killed two Ghanaian ministers and six other prominent Ghanaians.

Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, a presenter on Wontumi TV, on Saturday, August 9, 2025, claimed without proof that Mr. Mahama had a hand in the deadly helicopter crash.

But in a statement released on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the management of Wontumi TV explained that Kofi Asare’s comments made in the heat of national mourning and with no regard to the pain the bereaved families are feeling over the loss of their loved ones in the crash were “inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting.”

According to Wontumi TV, the presenter’s comments did not represent its views, policies, or editorial position.

The television station said its presenter made the remarks without evidence.

Wontumi TV noted that “As a responsible media house, we deeply regret the distress and reputational harm this may have caused to the President, the NDC, and the affected families.”

The helicopter crash which happened in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, claimed the lives of Ghana’s Defence and Environment Ministers, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
