Tyla Faces Lawsuit Over ‘Water’ Royalty and Production Credit Dispute

South African pop star and Grammy winner Tyla is facing a lawsuit regarding her global hit song “Water.” Two co-writers have filed a legal claim in the United States, alleging they were unjustly denied producer credits and a fair share of royalties tied to the song’s worldwide success.

According to Billboard, the co-writers assert that their contributions to the production elements of “Water” went beyond songwriting, warranting recognition and compensation for their role in the song’s final arrangement and production.

Since its 2023 release, “Water” has dominated global charts, gained viral traction on platforms like TikTok, and earned Tyla a Grammy Award, solidifying her status as one of Africa’s fastest-rising music stars. The lawsuit underscores ongoing industry debates about fair attribution and payment in collaborative music projects, where the boundaries between songwriting and production often blur. Tyla’s team has not yet publicly responded to the allegations.
