The detention of a software developer has sparked outraged across Kenya, with human rights calling for her immediate release from police custody.
Rose Njeri is the software developer who created a tool to help Kenyans oppose the President William Ruto government’s
annual finance bill because of fears that it will raise the cost of living across Kenya.
On Friday, May 30, 2025, Kenyan police reportedly raided her home in the capital, Nairobi and detained her. Police seized electronic devises, according to activists. Njeri is said to be a mother of two.
Members of the Law Society of Kenya and other human rights activists visited the police station to demand Njeri’s release from custody
It would be recalled that in 2024, mass protests broke out across Kenya after the government proposed tax hikes, forcing President Ruto to withdraw the 2024 finance bill.
The controversial bill outlines how the Kenyan government intends to raise income.
Some 50 people were killed and several others were abducted in a security force crackdown to end the protests.
