Award-winning Ghanaian actor and politician John Dumelo has been declared the winner of the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary election following Ghana’s general election held on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
His victory marks a historic moment, as he becomes the first National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate to win the constituency in 24 years.
Projections of Dumelo’s triumph began to circulate on Saturday night as results from polling stations showed him leading. His win was officially announced this afternoon, Sunday, December 8, defeating incumbent Lydia Seyram Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
This victory is not only a personal milestone for Dumelo, who will be serving in Parliament for the first time, but also a significant achievement for the NDC in a traditionally NPP stronghold. It reflects shifting voter dynamics in the constituency, which includes a diverse electorate of students, professionals, and business owners.
Additionally, former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate, also secured a win in the constituency’s presidential election, adding to the party’s momentum.
John Dumelo’s campaign focused on addressing local issues such as infrastructure, youth unemployment, and community development. His appeal as a well-known figure in Ghana’s entertainment industry also resonated with younger voters, contributing to his success.
