Zambian-born singer, songwriter, and activist Moonga K. has made a powerful return with the release of his new single, “hold on!”, offering a soulful preview of his upcoming EP Outlaw, set to drop on June 27.
Known for his fearless artistry and genre-defying sound, Moonga K. blends funk, soul, and country in a project that reimagines the cowboy narrative through a queer African lens.
Described as a “choir-driven anthem of resilience,” “hold on!” captures the EP’s core themes: courage, identity, and self-determination. The track’s emotionally charged harmonies and stirring storytelling reflect Moonga K.’s commitment to breaking musical and social boundaries.
The single was announced with a visually striking teaser filmed at a horse ranch, setting the tone for the Outlaw era. Moonga K. takes on the role of a lone cowboy — guitar in hand, traversing vast landscapes, small-town bars, and unseen spaces — in a reclamation of country music’s often-overlooked Black roots.
“The single encapsulates the spirit of Outlaw, a narrative that follows Moonga K. as a lone cowboy on the open road,” read an official statement. The upcoming music video, shot across South Africa and Lesotho, promises to spotlight the rugged beauty of that journey while reflecting the artist’s raw and personal evolution.
Moonga K. also announced a second single, “stole my heart”, arriving May 16, which explores a queer cowboy love story — further expanding Outlaw’s rich and inclusive narrative.
With more music, visuals, global performances, and immersive experiences on the horizon, Outlaw is shaping up to be a groundbreaking project. Through it, Moonga K. continues his mission to amplify underrepresented voices and redefine genres on his own fearless terms.
