The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament has sounded the alarm on the deteriorating security situation in Bawku, warning that the Ghanaian government’s inaction could lead to further bloodshed and humanitarian crisis in the town.

The main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament and Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, addressing the press in Accra, the capital of Ghana, said the violence has spiraled out of control, with sporadic shootings, arson, and home invasions becoming the new norm.

Key Concerns

– Escalating Violence: The intensity and frequency of attacks have reached alarming levels, with a growing sophistication of weaponry being used.

– Humanitarian Crisis: Schools have closed, healthcare delivery has been disrupted, and businesses are relocating out of fear, with public servants refusing postings to the area.

– Regional Security Threat: Bawku’s unrest poses a national and regional security threat, with attacks spreading to neighboring regions like the North East and Ahafo.

Call to Action

The Minority is calling on the government to:

– Review Security Strategy: Immediately review the current security strategy to prevent further escalation.

– Engage Stakeholders: Engage all relevant stakeholders, including traditional leaders, civil society, and affected communities, in a concerted effort to restore peace.

Urgent Need for Intervention

Rev. Ntim Fordjour emphasized that the people of Bawku deserve to live in peace and security, and the government must treat this situation with the urgency and seriousness it demands. Delays in action will only result in more lives lost and further destabilization. The pattern of violence in Bawku is both predictable and preventable, and it’s time for the government to take decisive action to break the cycle of violence.
