President William Ruto on Monday held talks with President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, focusing on strengthening relations between Kenya, Africa and the European Union through expanded trade, digital cooperation and global governance reforms.

In a statement after the meeting, President Ruto described the European Parliament as a key partner in fostering closer cooperation between Kenya, Africa and the EU.

The discussions centered on deepening Kenya-European Union relations for mutual economic and strategic benefit, with both leaders welcoming progress under the Kenya-European Union Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and the EU-Kenya Digital Partnership.

President Ruto said the two sides reviewed advancements in the Digital Dialogue and the Data Adequacy process, initiatives expected to boost digital trade, attract investment and reinforce Kenya’s position as a leading digital hub in Africa.

The leaders also called for support towards the conclusion and implementation of the Cross-Border Trade in Services framework, which is expected to create new opportunities for businesses in both Kenya and Europe.

According to President Ruto, Kenya’s youthful, highly educated and technology-driven workforce positions the country as a strategic partner for Europe in the digital economy.

Beyond trade and investment, the talks also addressed broader international economic and political reforms.

President Ruto urged support for reforms to the global financial architecture to improve access to affordable financing for developing countries and ensure fairer treatment of emerging economies.

The meeting further highlighted the need for reforms within global governance institutions, including the United Nations Security Council, to make them more inclusive, equitable and representative of the modern world order.

The engagement underscores Kenya’s growing diplomatic and economic ties with the European Union as Nairobi continues to position itself as a regional hub for trade, technology and international cooperation.
