Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah Grieves the Passing of His Grandfather

The football community is offering its condolences to Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah following the death of his grandfather, Ahmed Abdel Aziz Al Bambi. According to reports from Egyptian media, Mr. Al Bambi passed away on Monday morning, February 9, 2026.

Family Announcement

The news was officially shared by Salah’s uncle, Abdel Aziz Al Bambi, who serves as the head of the Mohamed Salah Youth Centre. In a moving tribute to his father, he requested prayers for mercy and forgiveness from the family’s well-wishers and the wider sporting community.

“The family is in deep mourning,” the statement indicated, as supporters across the globe began sharing messages of solidarity with the Egyptian captain.

Funeral Rites in Nagrig

Funeral services are scheduled to be held at the Grand Mosque of Musa in Nagrig, the village in the Gharbia Governorate where Salah was raised. Given Salah’s status as a national icon, local authorities and community leaders expect a massive turnout from the village and surrounding areas for the prayers and subsequent burial.

Context and Club Commitments

The loss comes at a particularly difficult time for the winger. Just hours before the news broke, Salah was on the pitch for Liverpool in a high-stakes Premier League encounter against Manchester City on Sunday night. The match ended in a 2–1 defeat for the Reds, further adding to a demanding week for the player.

As of now, it remains unclear whether Salah will be granted leave to travel to Egypt for the burial, as Liverpool navigates a congested fixture list in both domestic and European competitions.

The player has often used his platform to support his home village, and the community in Nagrig has frequently spoken of the close bond between the star and his extended family.
