Ghana: Baba Jamal Wins NDC Ayawaso East Parliamentary Primary, urges Party Unity

Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, has called for unity within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after emerging winner of the party’s parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso East Constituency.

Addressing party supporters shortly after the official declaration of results on Saturday, February 7, 2026, Baba Jamal expressed deep gratitude to Allah, describing his victory as one achieved through divine grace rather than personal effort alone. He said the primary had been an intense and emotionally demanding process, not only for him but also for his family and campaign team.

According to him, the campaign period was particularly challenging due to its short duration and the high expectations surrounding the contest. Despite these pressures, he said he remained thankful for the strength and guidance that carried him through what he described as a “very hectic and difficult journey.”

Baba Jamal extended appreciation to a wide range of individuals and institutions, including the presidency, party leadership, ministers of state, Members of Parliament, and the media, whom he credited for their role in ensuring transparency and public engagement throughout the process. He paid special tribute to his campaign team, noting that they worked tirelessly over a two-week period to mobilise support and communicate his message to delegates.

He also thanked the delegates and constituents of Ayawaso East for the confidence reposed in him, saying their support had placed a responsibility on his shoulders to work harder for both the party and the constituency.

In a conciliatory tone, Baba Jamal congratulated his fellow aspirants and emphasised that the outcome of the primary should not be seen as a personal triumph but as a collective win for the NDC. He acknowledged the competitive nature of internal party elections and said such contests were essential for strengthening the party’s democratic culture.

“Elections within the party are never easy,” he noted, adding that the process inevitably produces a winner but must ultimately unite the party. He invited all contestants to rally behind him and work together to ensure victory for the NDC in the forthcoming Ayawaso East by-election.

He further assured party members that his leadership would be inclusive, stressing that his doors remain open to everyone, including those who contested against him. Baba Jamal said the experiences and ideas shared during the campaign would help shape a stronger and more effective strategy for retaining the seat.

Reflecting on the personal toll of the campaign, he thanked his family for their patience and sacrifice, admitting that the intense schedule had left little time for them in recent weeks. He expressed optimism that, with the primary now concluded, he could refocus on building consensus and preparing for the next phase of the electoral contest.

Baba Jamal concluded his remarks with prayers for continued blessings and peace, stating his commitment to working with party supporters and constituents to bring development and progress to Ayawaso East.

The final results of the closely contested primary showed Baba Jamal polling 431 votes, narrowly defeating Hajia Amina Adam, who secured 399 votes. Mohammed Ramme placed third with 88 votes, followed by Dr Yakubu Azindow with 45 votes, while Mohammed Najib received one vote.

The keenly fought contest attracted significant public attention, especially amid earlier discussions about campaign conduct and party discipline. Party officials, however, commended the overall peaceful nature of the exercise and urged supporters to remain focused on the bigger task ahead.

With the primary concluded, Baba Jamal now becomes the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East and will lead the party into the by-election, as it seeks to retain the seat and consolidate its support base in the constituency.
