Nigeria: Two Women Arrested Over Alleged Trafficking of 16-Year-Old to Ghana

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two women in connection with the alleged trafficking of a 16-year-old girl from Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area, to Ghana.

The arrests were confirmed on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who said the suspects were apprehended following a report of a missing minor and the use of technology-driven intelligence.

Details of the Arrest

According to the police, operatives attached to the Ozubulu Police Division arrested the suspects — Uzoma Nwabueze and Precious Monday — on the evening of January 26.

The arrest followed a complaint regarding the disappearance of Miss Oluebube Chukwuma, aged 16, from Ozubulu community.

Confession and Victim’s Whereabouts

SP Ikenga stated that during interrogation, the suspects admitted their involvement in the case and revealed that the teenager had been taken to Ghana. The circumstances surrounding her movement and purpose of relocation are now central to ongoing investigations.

Police Action and Investigation

In response to the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for further investigation.

The Commissioner also directed investigators to:
• Trace the route used to traffic the minor to Ghana
• Identify and arrest other individuals linked to the alleged trafficking network
• Intensify efforts to ensure the safe recovery of the victim

Assurance to the Public

The police command reassured residents of Anambra State of its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, especially minors, and tackling human trafficking and related crimes.

Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to be charged in court upon the conclusion of inquiries.
