Emergency services were called to the scene near The Wheatsheaf pub on Kingston Road at approximately 3.30pm on Monday, December 9, following reports that a man had been seriously injured. Officers arrived alongside paramedics to find the victim lying in a narrow alleyway next to the pub.

Despite extensive efforts by emergency responders, assisted by members of the public who were nearby at the time, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later confirmed that his family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.

Timeline of events

According to Surrey Police, investigators believe the incident occurred shortly before emergency services were contacted. Detectives are focusing on activity in the area between 3.15pm and 3.30pm, particularly along Kingston Road and surrounding streets.

Witnesses reported a visible police presence within minutes of the call, with officers securing the area and establishing cordons while forensic teams began examining the scene. The alleyway and parts of the road near the pub were closed for several hours as investigations continued.

Police have not released the identity of the victim, pending formal identification and to allow time for relatives to be informed fully. The exact circumstances leading up to the stabbing have also not yet been made public.

Arrests and investigation

Surrey Police confirmed that the three suspects were arrested following initial enquiries and remain detained while officers carry out interviews and gather evidence. Due to the age of two of the suspects, strict legal reporting restrictions apply, meaning no further personal details can be disclosed.

Detectives are treating the case as an isolated incident, but have stressed that investigations are at an early stage. Officers are continuing to review CCTV footage from nearby properties and businesses, and are also examining mobile phone data and forensic evidence recovered from the scene.

A spokesperson for Surrey Police said specialist teams are working to establish exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the victim’s death.

“This is a fast-moving investigation, and we are working hard to piece together the full circumstances,” the spokesperson said. “We understand this incident will be deeply concerning for the local community.”

Appeal for witnesses

Police are urging anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward, even if they believe the information they have is minor.

“We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw or heard a disturbance or altercation on Kingston Road around 3.20pm,” the spokesperson added. “Any information or footage could prove vital to our investigation.”

Members of the public who may have dashcam footage, mobile phone recordings, or CCTV covering the area are encouraged to contact Surrey Police directly. Information can be provided by quoting reference number PR/45250148304.

For those who prefer not to speak directly with police, information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Community response

The incident has shocked local residents and businesses in Ewell, a normally quiet suburban area. Several people gathered near police cordons in the hours following the incident, while others laid flowers nearby as a mark of respect.

Local councillors expressed condolences to the victim’s family and thanked emergency services for their swift response. They also urged the public to avoid speculation while police continue their work.

Surrey Police have reassured residents that additional patrols will be carried out in the area over the coming days to provide reassurance and maintain public safety.

The suspects are expected to remain in custody while police continue questioning them. A post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course to formally establish the cause of death.

Officers have emphasised that the investigation remains active and that further arrests or charges may follow as evidence is reviewed.
