Indian Cinema Mourns as Veteran Actor Dharmendra Passes Away at 89

Indian film icon Dharmendra, one of Bollywood’s most celebrated and enduring stars, has passed away at the age of 89 following a short illness. The actor, who had been receiving medical care at South Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital in the days leading up to his death, passed on Monday, November 24, 2025.

The news has sent shockwaves across India and the global film community. Tributes have poured in from political leaders, fellow actors, and fans worldwide. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Dharmendra’s passing as “the conclusion of an unforgettable chapter in Indian cinema,” praising his contributions to the arts and his connection with audiences across generations.

Throughout the day, family members, film personalities, and admirers gathered at the actor’s residence and later at the crematorium to honour him. His sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol—both prominent actors themselves—performed the final rites in the presence of close relatives and colleagues.

Dharmendra’s career, spanning more than six decades, includes some of Bollywood’s most iconic films. He is fondly remembered for his charismatic roles in classics such as Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Phool Aur Patthar, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Raja Jani, Jugnu, Dharam Veer, and many more. Known for his versatility, he excelled in action, romance, and comedy, earning him the title “He-Man of Bollywood” during the peak of his career.

Even in his later years, Dharmendra continued to make notable appearances. His performance in the 2023 film Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, directed by Karan Johar, was widely praised and introduced him to a new generation of viewers.

Dharmendra leaves behind his wives, Prakash Kaur and actress-politician Hema Malini, along with his six children—Sunny, Bobby, Vijeta, Ajeeta, Esha, and Ahana—each of whom has made their own mark in the entertainment industry or other fields.

As fans gather outside his home and memorial events are planned across India, it is clear that Dharmendra’s legacy will continue to shape Bollywood and inspire future performers for years to come.
