Wiltshire Police have launched a homicide investigation after a woman in her 50s was discovered dead inside a house in Moredon, Swindon, leading to the arrest of a 13-year-old girl on suspicion of murder.
Emergency services were called to the property on Baydon Close on Thursday night following reports of a disturbance. When officers arrived, they found the woman unresponsive, and she was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterward.
Detective Inspector Darren Ambrose confirmed that the teenage girl is currently the only suspect. “This is a very serious incident, and our thoughts are with the family of the woman who has lost her life,” he said. “A cordon is in place as officers carry out enquiries, and we are not seeking anyone else in connection with the investigation at this time.”
In a statement, the force urged residents to avoid speculation while police work to establish the circumstances surrounding the death. The girl remains in custody at a secure location, and specialist officers have been assigned to support those affected.
Local residents have been advised that there will be an increased police presence in the area as forensic teams continue their work. Officers are also conducting house-to-house enquiries and reviewing CCTV from nearby streets.
Wiltshire Police said safeguarding procedures are being followed due to the age of the suspect, and the case is being handled with oversight from senior detectives and child-protection specialists.
The woman’s next of kin have been informed, and a post-mortem examination is expected to take place in the coming days.
