NIGERIA: FG Orders Immediate Closure of 41 Unity Schools Nationwide Amid Student Abduction Fears

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, has ordered the temporary closure of 41 Federal Unity Colleges (FUCs) nationwide, following a worrying surge in attacks and student abductions across the country.

The closures were mandated in a circular released on Friday by Binta Abdulkadir, Director of Senior Secondary Education at the ministry, and described as a necessary measure to safeguard lives amid escalating security threats.

“Sequel to recent security challenges in parts of the country and to prevent any security breaches, the Honourable Minister of Education has approved the immediate closure of the listed Federal Unity Colleges. Principals of the affected colleges are to ensure strict compliance,” the circular stated.

Context of the Security Crisis

The move comes shortly after the Niger State Police confirmed that armed bandits attacked St. Mary’s Private (Catholic) Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara LGA, on the early hours of November 21, 2025.

According to SP W.A. Abiodun, the state police spokesperson, several students were abducted from the school hostel around 2:00 a.m. This incident, among others, has highlighted the extreme vulnerability of boarding schools in Northern Nigeria.

The order affects institutions spread across multiple states, including Federal Government Girls Colleges (FGGC), Federal Government Colleges (FGC), and Federal Technical Colleges (FTC):
