Arsenal Football Club has been severely impacted by the recent international break, with both center-backs Gabriel Maghalães and Ricardo Calafiori returning injured. The situation is critical, as the Brazilian defender is now ruled out for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
Gabriel’s Devastating Blow
The Brazilian centre-back was substituted while on duty with the national team, and subsequent scans revealed that the damage was severe enough to require surgery.
Gabriel has been one of Arsenal’s most consistent performers, providing stability, aerial dominance, and leadership in defence. His absence will not only affect defensive depth but also severely disrupt the team’s chemistry at the back with partner William Saliba.
Brazil’s head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, spoke about the injury situation, expressing his regret:
“Is his injury serious or not? I don’t know either. He suffered a closed muscle injury. Our medical team will conduct a more thorough examination tomorrow. We sincerely apologize for his injury; it’s really something no one wants. When a player is injured, you always hope they will be able to recover well and come back as soon as possible.”
Calafiori Update and London Derby Concern
On a slightly less severe note, Riccardo Calafiori also returned to Arsenal after his assignment with the Italian national team. However, reports suggest his injury is only a precautionary measure, and he should be available for the upcoming highly anticipated double London derby against Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.
Arsenal fans will be anxiously hoping Calafiori is fit to step up and fill the massive void left by Gabriel’s long-term absence.
