British-Nigerian Rapper Dave Releases Third Album ‘The Boy Who Played The Harp’

British-Nigerian rapper Dave has officially released his highly anticipated third studio album, The Boy Who Played The Harp, through Neighbourhood Recordings. The 10-track project serves as a deeply introspective follow-up to his 2021 Mercury Prize-winning release, We’re All Alone In This Together.

The album features a selective and compelling lineup of guest appearances, including James Blake, Jim Legxacy, UK grime veteran Kano, and Nigerian Afrobeats star Tems.

Themes and Soundscape

The album’s title alludes to the Book of Samuel in the Bible (1 Samuel 16:14–23), where the young shepherd David was summoned to play the harp to soothe King Saul, who was being troubled by evil spirits. This metaphor underscores the album’s core themes of faith, identity, and the redemptive power of artistry.

The Boy Who Played The Harp is noted for its heavier, quieter, and more introspective atmosphere compared to Dave’s previous work. James Blake’s arrangements emphasize empty space and sonic depth, while Tems brings a much-needed warmth and melodic presence. Kano offers a mentor’s calm, and Jim Legxacy’s melodic instincts echo throughout the corners of the production.

Standout Tracks

  • “175 Months”: A track that transforms a prayer into intense rap theater.
  • “Fairchild”: A powerful song that confronts gendered violence with brutal clarity.
  • “Chapter 16”: Highlights a rare and meaningful intergenerational dialogue.

The project successfully balances vulnerability with lyrical mastery, confirming Dave’s reputation as one of the UK’s most poetic and critically acclaimed rappers.

Upcoming Arena Tour

To celebrate the album’s release, Dave has announced a 14-date arena tour across the UK and Europe, scheduled for next Spring.
