Crowds of mourners in Kenya desperately seeking to view the body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a man they fondly called “Baba”, were forced to fled after Kenyan police fired gunshots and teargas at them in a stadium in Nairobi.

The shootings allegedly caused injuries to several mourners in the stadium.

Security officers were seeking to disperse the increasing crowds. It however remains unclear whether the police were using live ammunition or rubber bullets.

Mr. Odinga died in India on Wednesday morning, October 15, 2025, and his body returned to Kenya on Thursday, October 16.

Thousands of mourners besieged the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to welcome his body home.

From the airport, thousands of people moved in a procession to escort the vehicle carrying the body to the stadium, about 10km (six miles) from the city centre.

Due to unexpectedly large crowds, the public viewing ceremony for Odinga’s body was moved to Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre in the Kasarani neighbourhood, rather than inside the parliament building where it was initially scheduled to take place.

Odinga will be given a state burial in his hometown of Bondo on Sunday. He is said to have asked for him to be buried 72 hours after his death.
