Ghana: Akwatia Police To Investigate Attack On NPP’s 3rd Vice Chairman During By-Election

Police in the Akwatia constituency of the Eastern Region of Ghana have started an investigation into an alleged attack on Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the third Vice Chairman of Ghana’s main opposition political party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The alleged attack took place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, during the Akwatia Constituency parliamentary by-election.

As earlier reported, violence erupted at the Akwatia Lorry Station in the Vawaso Electoral Area on Tuesday during the by-election. A confrontation broke out between Alhaji Osman Masawudu and the escort of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka.

According to Alhaji Masawudu, the altercation happened while he was speaking to the media near the Akwatia Zongo area, where he had been deployed to monitor the polls.

In a statement issued on Thursday, September 4, 2025, the Eastern South Regional Police Command said Alhaji Masawudu was provided with a police medical form to seek treatment at a hospital, after which the endorsed form is to be returned to aid further investigations.

According to the statement, the case has since been referred to the Eastern South Regional Police Command for continuation of the probe.

The statement, signed by DSP David Fianko Okyere of the Public Affairs Unit of the Eastern South Region, assured that the police are committed to ensuring a thorough investigation into the matter.
