Head of the Catholic church, Pope Leo XIV has called for humanitarian aid for Sudan amid ongoing war in the country.
He made the appeal to the international community on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
The current war in Sudan started in April 2023.
In his address at St Peter’s Square, Pope Leo also asked for prayers for those affected by Sunday’s devastating landslide in the Sudan’s Darfur region.
The mudslide reportedly killed over 1,000 persons in the Marra Mountains.
According to the Pope, “Dramatic news is coming out of Sudan, particularly Darfur, in el-Fasher, where numerous civilians are trapped in the city, victims of famine and violence.”
He says “As if that were not enough, the spread of cholera threatens hundreds of thousands of people who are already exhausted.”
The war has been ongoing between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Pope Leo says “I am closer than ever to the Sudanese people, especially families, children, and displaced persons. I pray for all the victims.”
