UNDP Ghana Hands Over ICT and Office Equipment to Legal Aid Commission, Calls for Partnerships to Sustain Access to Justice

 The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has handed over ICT and office equipment worth over USD 180,000 to the Legal Aid Commission (LAC) as part of efforts to strengthen access to justice for poor and vulnerable groups across Ghana.

The handover follows a comprehensive gap assessment conducted across 10 regional and 6 district offices of the Commission under the Strengthening Legal Aid Delivery for Improved Access to Justice for the poor and vulnerable in Ghana project, funded by the Government of the United States of America.

The assessment revealed critical infrastructure and capacity gaps that hindered the Legal Aid Commission’s ability to deliver timely and effective legal aid services. In response, UNDP, with U.S. support, procured ICT equipment such as laptops, servers, printers, desktop computers, and office furniture to equip the Commission’s offices nationwide.

Speaking at the ceremony, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Shaima Hussein emphasized the importance of sustaining these gains:

“The equipment provided will continue to strengthen the Commission’s capacity to deliver access to justice for the poor and vulnerable. We call on development partners, the private sector, and civil society to join us in upscaling this vital work so no one is left behind in accessing justice,” she stated.

The Executive Director of the Legal Aid Commission, Mr. Edmund Amarkwei Foley, expressed appreciation for the timely intervention, pledging responsible use of the equipment:

“This support comes at a crucial time to help us retool and improve our services. We assure our partners that the equipment will be well maintained and used responsibly to enhance access to justice for the poor and vulnerable across Ghana. On behalf of the Government of Ghana and the Commission, we express our sincere gratitude to UNDP and the US Government for this timely intervention,” he said.

UNDP reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening institutions that protect the rights of marginalized groups and called on new partners to join efforts to scale up access to justice initiatives nationwide.
