25 People Rescued, 25 Others Presumed Dead 2 Days After Boat Capsized in Nigeria

Two days after a boat carrying 50 people capsized in Nigeria, authorities say 25 persons have been rescued while 25 others remain missing and presumed dead.

In a statement released on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) stated that 25 persons were still unaccounted for and presumed dead.

According to NEMA, no bodies have been recovered as of Tuesday morning.

The boat was said to be transporting women, children, and motorcycles to Goronyo market but capsized on Sunday, August 17, according to authorities who blamed the accident on overloading.

Authorities also blamed the accident on poor infrastructure which they believe forces many residents to rely on water transport.
