Ayodeji Balogun, globally known as Wizkid, has made history as the first African artist to exceed 9 billion streams across all credits on Spotify, reinforcing his position as a leading figure in global music. The Nigerian Afrobeats star’s milestone on the world’s largest streaming platform underscores his profound influence and commercial success, establishing him as one of Africa’s most iconic artists.
Wizkid’s top-streamed song, One Dance (2016), a collaboration with Drake and Kyla, has garnered over 3.7 billion streams, ranking among Spotify’s top 10 most-streamed tracks and holding a Guinness World Record as the first song to reach 1 billion streams on the platform. As a lead artist, his track Essence featuring Tems, with over 303 million streams, became a Grammy-nominated Afrobeats anthem that elevated the genre’s global presence.
Despite Taylor Swift leading Spotify with over 1.5 billion monthly streams, Wizkid’s achievement marks a significant triumph for African music, highlighting Afrobeats’ rising prominence on the world stage.
