A candidate of Nigeria’s opposition political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election, Jude Ezenwafor, has reportedly been shot by unknown gunmen in Abuja, Nigeria.
The shooting incident happened on Friday night, July 18, 2025, a report by Nigerian media outlet, Vanguard has revealed.
The report says the shooting incident took place near Wuse 2 as Ezenwafor was returning home from a private meeting.
Eyewitnesses say the assailants ambushed his vehicle and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Ezenwafor, a prominent real estate developer based in the capital, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed private hospital. Medical sources say he remains in critical but stable condition.
Two other individuals who were traveling with him at the time of the attack were also injured and are undergoing treatment.
Security operatives have launched an investigation into the shooting, but the motive behind the attack and the identities of the gunmen remain unknown as of press time.
Ezenwafor is one of the front-runners in the race for the Anambra governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025. The incident has sparked concern among party supporters and raised fresh questions about the security of political candidates ahead of the polls.
