Nigerian Opposition Leader Peter Obi Clarifies Why He Missed Buhari’s Burial

The 2023 presidential candidate of Nigeria’s Labour Party, Peter Obi, has clarified why he couldn’t attend late former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari’s burial in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

Mr. Obi faced sharp criticisms on Tuesday and Wednesday morning for missing Buhari’s burial.

But the former Anambra State Governor says he missed the burial because he could not get a flight on Tuesday.

However, on Wednesday morning, he joined former Nigerian Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, in paying a condolence visit to Buhari’s family in Daura.

Speaking in an interview with Nigerian media outlet, Arise TV from the private residence of Buhari in Daura, Mr. Obi says
“It was difficult to come yesterday (Tuesday) because there was no flight,” adding that “Even if there was a flight, you couldn’t land in Katsina Airport. It was all closed, because there was a lot of dignitaries.”

“Mourning continues until tomorrow. So, whoever comes today and tomorrow, is still part of the mourning.”
