US President, Donald Trump on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, signed an executive order banning the citizens of 12 countries from traveling to America.
Trump says the travel ban was necessary to protect America against “foreign terrorists” and other security threats.
The affected countries are Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.
Citizens from seven other countries: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela, will be partially restricted from traveling to America.
In a video posted on X, Trump says: “We will not allow people to enter our country who wish to do us harm.”
Announcing the travel ban, Trump says “We don’t want them”.
There are some exceptions to the travel ban, including athletes traveling for major sporting events, some Afghan citizens and dual nationals with citizenship in unaffected countries.
The travel ban will come into effect on June 9, 2025. It is in fulfillment of a promise Trump made during his 2024 election campaign.
